Home Depot required to scan drivers license and or passport for returns! I am outragged!

Home Depot required to scan drivers license and or passport for returns!

Today I returned an item I purchased last week from Home Depot today.  I presented the cashier with my original store receipt and credit card used to purchased the item.  I was told I needed to provide a driver's license, state ID or passport to receive a credit or make an exchange.  I was like, OK you need to verify that I am who I say I am.  The cashier said no I need to enter your ID information into the computer database. Of course I refused and called the manager.  The manager came out and said it is new store policy.  I asked where was it posted; it wasn't!  Again, I refused to provide my ID as I had an ordinal valid receipt and just purchased the item the week before.  The manage informed me that he would not return my item without an ID that he could record the information.

Well, my ID has been stolen twice so I am very worried about this policy.  I am worried about identity theft and think it's ridiculous to require this for a credit card purchase. Maybe I could understand if I did not have a receipt or if was beyond the return period.

Are they allowed to do this? Do I have any rights here? I don't trust them to store my license information in their database.  Well, I called the corporate office and plan to lodge a complaint.  I also called 7 On Your Side and other local news stations in my area.   If there is anything else I can do please let me know?

What is happening here that customers have to turn over their personal information to a stranger to store in a database?  A database that you don't know if it is even secure.  If they are tyring to deter customers from making returns, I get it loud and clear and will take my business elsewhere!
